Brussels sprouts are a popular fall crop in New England, but little information about varietal performance exists. We have evaluated nine varieties in a replicated design in 2013 and 2014, and are repeating the study in 2015.
Many questions also exist about the practice of topping, or removal of the apical meristem. Topping at the correct time can increase the uniformity of sprouts along the stalk, but topping at the wrong time can lower yields and quality. We have studied the practice of topping for several varieties over two years, and are continuing this work in 2015.
